Coiled Safety Pin - Large

Oxidized sterling silver, brass and copper.  Large size, safety pin style closure for all your larger, bulky knits.  Comes in three sizes; small, medium & large.  The large safety pin size is for use with large shawls, wraps, scarves and cardigans.  Can either “pierce” the knitted fabric in between the stitches, or gather the knitted fabric (i.e. for a shawl, wrap or scarf) in between the safety pin “arms”, and clip the pin closed so it surrounds all the material without piercing it (as demonstrated in Image #3).  This large size is good for any larger fingering weight or heavier shawl, wrap or scarf, but works best on heavier weight yarn fabrics.  It’s too heavy for any lace weight project, smaller sized shawl, wrap or thinner style of scarf or cowl.  For those smaller projects made with lighter weight yarn, either the medium or small sized Coiled Safety Pin is a better choice.

Completely hand wrought by Lisa in her Toronto Studio.  Made from sterling silver, copper and brass wire.  Each one is carefully handmade, one at a time, and therefore are all slightly different.  Each pin is approximately 4.5″ in length, 1.5″ wide, and the biggest coil in oxidized sterling is about 1/2″ in diameter. Each pin weighs approximately 42 grams, which is another reason why it needs to be used on heavier weight yarn projects, so it can support the weight without damaging the fibre.  Lisa makes each of these pins with the same attention to detail, so they are all relatively the same, just separated by the small differences that come with the individual creating process.

The sterling and brass coils move on the safety pin, and if you grab a really generous portion of knitted fabric, you can adjust where you would like the coils to sit once it is affixed to the garment.  Shown on Across the Waters Cowl pattern knitted with Coriand3r Knits gradient fingering/3 ply merino yak nylon yarn and Classic Elite Yarns Adelaide, DK/Sport weight, in dark gray.
