In my line of work I create a lot of sterling scrap and I keep every single piece. I make design elements from my scrap bin and I have a pile of similar shapes. Some of these shapes are the ends of the wire that I cut off the mandrel when I wind my wire into coils. These end coil bits make a perfect half heart shape, so I spend countless hours matching up each half heart with it's perfect mate, to create a "missing heart" and then fuse the two pieces together (soldering without the aid of solder). Once that is done, I hammer the hearts, then cut off the sharp bits, emery and polish. Some I leave shiny and others I oxidize, to create a dark, gun metal appearance. I then mix them up and add as elements to jewellery designs.
