Just Some 2022 Musings...

As I write this, the snow is falling again. Good thing I like winter. I've already managed to x-country ski on the West Toronto Railpath TWICE! They clear the Railpath better than they clean the streets in our neighbourhood, much to my chagrin, as it makes a great ski trail. But I guess they are worried about all the winter runners, or young families with baby strollers. So when we get a really good dump of snow, like we did mid-January, you have to be quick to jump into your skis and break a trail, knowing that it will be...

Say Hello to Karen Franzen

Say Hello to Karen Franzen

Beyond The Front Studio, circa 1995Located at 245 Carlaw Avenue, Suite 309From left to right, Lisa Ridout, Karen Franzen, Robert Mitchell & Arina Ailincai What happens when you take two ceramic artists and two metalsmiths and put them in an east-end studio together? They form a group called Beyond the Front. I actually met Karen Franzen at the Craft Studios at Harbourfront Centre. The ceramics section was right next to the metal studio; so we, as a group had way more interactions together, just by the very way the craft studios were set up. Each resident is only allowed to...

Introducing Brad Copping Glass

Introducing Brad Copping Glass

Brad working in his Hot Shop Studio in Apsley, Ontario I met Brad way back in 1992 when I was accepted as a craft resident in the Metal Department at the Harbourfront Craft Studios. I applied to Harbourfront's Craft Resident Program while I was finishing up my Goldsmithing Diploma at George Brown College. Brad was already a resident in the Glass Blowing department, as he had graduated from Sheridan College's Glass Blowing Program in 1990. The glass blowing section at Harbourfront was always a very hot, busy place. There was lots of banter between the glass artists, as the practice...

Meet Monique Chan of MoonRox Jewellery & Accessories

Monique at her MoonRox Booth I met Monique in 2006 when we both participated in an accessories wholesale/trade show. Trade Shows are not open the public, they are for buyers that own bricks and mortar retail stores. Buyers come to look at jewellery and accessory lines to see what items are appropriate for their store and clientele. Monique's booth was across the aisle from mine. In the slow times, we would socialize to pass the time until our next buyer came along, and we discovered many similarities between us, including a life-long love of creating things with our hands. Confetti...

Introducing Saskia Wassing Embroidery

Introducing Saskia Wassing Embroidery

Saskia Wassing in her Toronto Studio I'm not sure exactly when in the 1990's I met Saskia Wassing? And I'm not sure she remembers either? That was a long time ago now. It could have been at one of the very first years I did the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair? Or we met via the West End Studio Tour, which is now defunct, but used to run every Fall in the Roncesvalles area of Toronto's west end. It started in the mid-90's and ran until about 2005, I think?  I was a guest artist at Saskia's house every Fall, for...
